【Fudono Kagura】
Fudono district is in a mountainous region of the Fudono River basin, located at the western end of Shiiba Village. The history of exchanges with the Kuma Hitoyoshi region is long. The residence of former village leader Mr. Genzo Nasu, also known as the place where folklorist Kunio Yanaguida stayed in 1908, has around fifty documents and archives from modern times. There are 37 households in the community, where the aging population is on the rise.
It is said that Fudono Shrine was founded 200 years ago and designated as a village shrine in December 1874. There is a festival for every season: a traditional archerry called matoi in spring, and a kagura performance in winter.
Fudono Kagura is performed at the Fudono Community Center on the first Saturday and Sunday of December. Traditionally the event was organized by four groups in turn and held at a private house. The Association for the Preservation of Fudono Kagura is made up of 20 people, or 25 including kids and elementary school teachers. Previously, the repertoires were passed from father to son for generations, and night kagura was cancelled for 20 days by the passing of the inhabitants. Dancers typically perform Fudono Kagura in kimono with their family crests, and stomp with vigor.
